Background Summary
Second Generation Gracie JiuJitsu Teacher
Professor Paulo Tavares
The Founder of Our School
My life's mission is to empower the community through the practice of Gracie Jiu Jitsu.
Confidence is a unique sensation. It's about being self-assured without arrogance and remaining humble without submission.
I find joy in sharing the lessons I've learned throughout my journey. My aim is to assist others in leading better lives and overcoming any obstacles they encounter.
Below, I share my personal story.
The Beginning
Back in Time
It's integral to my story to acknowledge my father, who initiated the Gracie Jiu Jitsu tradition in our family.
Born in 1940, affectionately known as "Fiusa" among his friends in Rio, he began his journey at the age of 8 in 1948, receiving private lessons at the Gracie Academy under the tutelage of Carlson Gracie.
During those times, the Gracie Family remained united, and my father fostered strong relationships with notable members such as Reyson Gracie, Rorion Gracie, Rolls Gracie, Grandmaster Carlos Gracie, and, of course, his mentor, Carlson Gracie.
Introducing Jiu Jitsu to Bahia
A 1960's Journey
Fiusa, my father, fell in love with Gracie Jiu Jitsu at a young age, deeply influenced by his close friendship with the Gracie family.
As the first son of a prosperous family, he completed an instructor course under Pedro Hemetério in São Paulo, referred by his mentor Reyson Gracie.
Later, in the 1960s, he seized the opportunity to live in Japan, the birthplace of Judo, where he furthered his skills at the Kodokan Dojo.
During his time in Japan, he explored Kimura's Dojo and forged connections with Judokas from the Iron Curtain, affording him opportunities to train in Russia, Poland, and Eastern Germany.
Upon returning to Brazil, Fiusa received authorization from Grandmasters Helio and Carlos Gracie to establish a Gracie Jiu Jitsu academy in Salvador, Bahia, his family's hometown and where I was born.
From The Cot to The Dojo
First Steps on the Tatami (jiu jitsu mats)
On August 15, 1972, coinciding with my father's birthday, I made my entrance into the world.
Fiusa had already established his Gracie Jiu Jitsu school in the living room of one of his family's colonial houses at an Iconic street called "8 de Dezembro" in the suburb of Graça, Salvador, where he had been for seven years.
It was in this very house, where he also resided, that I came into existence.
I can still recall peering through the "dog's" gate, observing the classes that took place on those mats.
It was there that I first learned to crawl and later to walk. My father would often leave me there with a bottle of water and some toys. Whenever my mother expressed concern, he reassured her, saying, "It's okay, he can't get hurt. If he falls, he'll learn to fall and get back up again on the mats."
Subsequently, my father assumed responsibility for his family's cocoa farming business in the southern part of our state, prompting us to relocate to the city of Ilhéus and the Dojo set up at the farm.
Training with my Father
School of Hard Knocks
At the age of around 6, my father introduced me to the stand-up aspect of Jiu Jitsu, which he referred to as Judo. He emphasized that while Gracie Jiu Jitsu was the most comprehensive form of self-defense, due to his weekday work commitments, it would be beneficial for me to begin my training by learning how to fall, execute throws, and become familiar with the kimono (GI).
His vision was for me to transition to Jiu Jitsu training at the Gracie Academy in Rio de Janeiro once I reached the appropriate age.
In addition to Jiu Jitsu, my father ensured that I learned self-defense techniques, conducting sessions on the beach or at the farm during weekends. These sessions were rigorous, and despite occasional tears on my part, I gained valuable insights and became more attuned to real-life situations.
Gracie Jiu Jitsu Immersion
1996 - Training at he Gracie Humaitá
Judo was a significant part of my life until I turned 15 years old. Following a one-year hiatus, at the age of 16, Charles Gracie relocated to Salvador (where my family had returned), and I commenced training Gracie Jiu Jitsu under his guidance. My passion for the art quickly flourished, and I harbored dreams of relocating to Rio de Janeiro to train at Gracie Academy.
In 1996, that dream became a reality as I seized the opportunity to move to Rio and commence training under the tutelage of Royler Gracie, Rolker Gracie, and under the watchful eye of the late Grandmaster Helio Gracie.
Gracie Jiu Jitsu Immersion
Training at The Gracie Humaitá
Training at the Gracie Academy was truly remarkable during that era. The competition team boasted numerous world champions, adding to the electric atmosphere.
Royler Gracie, at the height of his skills, led the team with prowess. The regular presence of Grandmaster Helio Gracie on Tuesdays and Thursdays lent a unique significance to those training sessions.
At the Gracie Academy, we were fortunate to attend classes led by an esteemed lineup of instructors, including Rickson Gracie (the school's founder, who later passed it on to his brothers Royler and Rolker), Relson Gracie, Helio Gracie, and Rolker Gracie
Becoming a Teacher
Unexpected Start
Life took me to São Paulo in 2005, where, upon Royler Gracie's recommendation, I began training at Ryan Gracie's School. It was there that I crossed paths with Fabio Leopoldo, a renowned teacher and World Champion.
In June of that year, Fabio extended an invitation for me to teach self-defense for women at Gracie Morumbi, his school. Eager for the opportunity, I accepted, marking the inception of my teaching journey.
During a trip to Rio, Fabio, acting as both a friend and mentor, ocasionally. met Royler and informed him of our collaboration.
During the Christmas break, while training at Gracie Humaita, Royler offered me a position as his assistant instructor (Apprentice). This role not only involved practical teaching but also included enrollment in the formal Gracie Academy instructor's course, granting me the opportunity to establish a branch of the school overseas, akin to other students.
This marked the commencement of my formal teaching path. I successfully completed the Instructor's course in September 2006.
Becoming a Gracie Jiu Jitsu Teacher
Little hint on the Apprenticeship
Being a student at Gracie Humaita is already an incredible experience, but undertaking an apprenticeship there adds a whole new dimension to one's knowledge.
As an apprentice, you have the privilege of observing all the private classes, assisting with group classes for kids, teenagers, and adults.
Your duties may include a lot of cleaning, answering phones, and more cleaning, along with opening and closing the school. However, the invaluable experience gained is worth a lifetime.
Conducting a class at Gracie Humaita, following the traditions established by Grandmaster Helio at the original Gracie Academy, is a truly unique experience that can only be fully appreciated through firsthand participation.
The level of commitment to perfection and discipline demanded in this environment is not for everyone, and I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of it.
Australia
The Beginning
It was 7pm on a cloudy Sunday evening, September 17, 2006, when I first arrived in Australia.
Initially, I assisted a training partner in opening his first full-time school in Sydney. However, as I had promised Royler Gracie not to compete with my training partner and his student by opening another Gracie Humaita in Sydney, I began seeking opportunities to establish my own school in a different city.
My chance came in the form of a boxing facility in the Central Coast of New South Wales. This quickly developed into two full-time locations.
I resided there for approximately four years, during which time I devoted myself to building and nurturing the Gracie Jiu Jitsu community in the region.
Gracie Bali
Introducing Gracie Jiu Jitsu to Indonesia
As a devoted student of the Gracie Academy and a disciple of the Gracie Family, I embraced the opportunity for a new challenge: bringing Gracie Jiu Jitsu and the Gracie Humaita legacy to Indonesia, specifically the island of Bali.
The school, named Gracie Bali, operated successfully for two years. However, I eventually had to return to Australia in order to maintain my residency status.
Today, I proudly hold Australian citizenship, continuing to carry the values and teachings of Gracie Jiu Jitsu wherever I go.
Back to Australia
The Birth of the Australian Academy of Gracie Jiu Jitsu
Perth was the city that I always had my eyes on since I was in Brazil, choosing a place to establish myself in Australia.
I guess it took me a few years but I finally arrived where I was supposed to be.
Nowadays we have evolved and matured all the knowledge received at the Gracie Academy, plus all the experience of teaching overseas in different countries since 2006.
During 8 years I offered Self Defense Based Gracie Jiu Jitsu in Perth, at our school in Peppermint Grove. With the mission to empower the community with training focussed on self defense with is the most important side of Gracie Jiu Jitsu.
PHD in Gracie Jiu Jitsu with Rickson Gracie
Following the Master
Master Rickson Gracie is renowned as the "Master of the Masters," a man who has dedicated his life to the holistic improvement of mind, body, and soul. They say, "when the student is ready, the master will come..."
I consider myself fortunate to have crossed paths with Master Rickson during my early twenties at the Gracie Humaitá in Brazil, where I was a regular blue belt.
Years later, now as a black belt, I seized the opportunity to become one of his pupils. The experience has been nothing short of transformative, filled with enlightening conversations, invaluable technical corrections, and profound guidance.
Under Rickson Gracie's mentorship, I have not only refined my skills in Gracie Jiu Jitsu but also learned the art of teaching Self Defense Based Gracie Jiu Jitsu. It has been an honor and a privilege to learn from such a legendary figure in the martial arts world.
Following the Master Around the World
New Task in Mind
I was invited to accompany Rickson Gracie during his seminar tours in Australia, Europe, the United States, and Japan. For two years, I traveled the world following the Master of the Masters.
This relationship not only expanded my knowledge of the art I faithfully represent but also opened my mind to different perspectives in life, new cultures, and new people.
It definitely sparked in me the desire to experience life in those places.
With my mind set on the task, I prepared my family, packed my bags, and embarked on a new venture. This time, my sights were set on Europe.
Spreading the Art in Europe
Old World, New Ventures
After travelling through a few countries in Europe, Amsterdam in the Netherlands was chosen to be our first base.
From there was possible visits to Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden teaching Gracie jiu jitsu and on our second year, we moved to Norway to experience something which was totally foreign to me. The Snow.
During one year we lived in the mountains, teaching Jiu Jitsu and learning snowboarding.
It was an amazing experience, with great people, new culture, and awesome times!
Back to Australia
Home Sweet Home
The call from home grew louder, and we knew we had to answer it.
We decided to settle in Brisbane, Queensland. Just like that, we have returned home to continue spreading Gracie Jiu Jitsu in a new place once again.
We are very happy to be in the sunshine state continuing our mission to Spread Gracie Jiu Jitsu around the world.
